Washington State First-aid requirements changed

On June 1, 1998 the Department of Labor and Industries updated first-aid rules in Chapter 296-24 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC).

These new rules cover workers across the state, providing employers with greater flexibility in meeting first aid care requirements.

Under the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA), employers are responsible for ensuring that appropriate first-aid care is readily available where employees are working.
Copies of the updated standard, the appendices and the training curriculum guidelines are available at http://www.wa.gov/lni/wisha/wacindex.htm.

Revised rules include the following:

  • Updates Industry-specific first-aid requirements to ensure consistency with general requirements
  • Provides employers with more flexibility in meeting first aid requirements
  • Continues worker protection rules that WISHA has enforced for 25 years

More changes are on the way... a proposed update will ensure that first-aid requirements in the industry-specific standards are consistent with the previously adopted general requirements in Chapter 24.

Industries affected include:

  • Construction work
  • Textile industry
  • Ski areas and operations
  • Telecommunications
  • Compressed air work
  • Sawmills and woodworking operations

If you are affected this is a "heads up" - look for new regulations.
